Acceptable Use Policy
Policy and rules for computing, including appropriate use. Members should use IRTNOG in a responsible, efficient, ethical, and legal manner. The use of IRTNOG is a privilege, not a right, which may be revoked at any time for inappropriate behavior. Users assume responsibility for understanding the policy and guidelines as a condition of using IRTNOG. Members of the public are accountable to use IRTNOG responsibly. Use of IRTNOG that is inconsistent with this policy may result in the loss of access as well as other disciplinary or legal action.
The primary purpose of IRTNOG, a private experimental network, is to facilitate research in advanced computer science and information systems topics, especially in the field of information security. The resources afforded its users and the services made publicly available are intended to advance the state of the art. The IRTNOG system operators believe that these tools and documentation promote individual and organizational safety, and that in general, professionals and scholars worldwide significantly expand their knowledge by accessing, using, and contributing to networked information resources and by collaborating in the public domain.
Privacy
Both the general public and IRTNOG users must be aware that information accessed, created, sent, received, or stored on the network is not private. It is subject to review by the IRTNOG system administrators. The IRTNOG system administrators may investigate complaints regarding activity, e-mail, or content that may be inappropriate or illegal.
Email Access
IRTNOG email users are expected to use proper professional etiquette in their communications:
- Email messages are not guaranteed to be private. The IRTNOG system administrators have access to all email in order to maintain the system.
- When sending email, use descriptive "Subject" lines.
- Protect the privacy of other people (e.g., do not post personal addresses or phone numbers without an individual's consent).
- Check your email frequently and delete it after reading it. All IRTNOG users must share the limited amount of storage allocated to email, so use this space sparingly.
- Remember to proofread your messages before sending, but also be tolerant of grammatical and spelling errors in messages from others. Not everyone on the Internet is a native speaker of your language (and even native speakers make mistakes).
- Be careful when using sarcasm or humor in your messages. Text messages lack the subtle visual and auditory cues that would otherwise inform your audience's perception of your jokes.
- Do not publicly criticize or inflame others. Remember that ad hominem attacks are logical fallacies. :)
- Treat all email-based conversations as if they were public. You cannot control what other people do with your messages, and what you say in the heat of passion may be used against you far into the future.
The following individuals are authorized to use email on IRTNOG:
- The system administrators' immediate or extended family;
- The system administrators' close personal friends or colleagues; and
- Others who are issued guest accounts based on their need for doing IRTNOG business.
